Customer Notice – Market Update – Australia Trade Lane Conditions & Capacity Outlook

We would like to provide a market update regarding current ocean freight conditions impacting Australia-bound trade lanes across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

Global shipping networks continue to face operational instability driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions, carrier network reshuffling, blank sailings, and vessel diversions linked to the evolving situation in the Middle East and Red Sea region. Whilst Australia is not directly within the affected zone, the flow-on impact across global vessel rotations is continuing to create schedule volatility and capacity constraints into the Australian market.

everal carriers have introduced revised service structures and alternative routings as vessels continue to divert around the Cape of Good Hope instead of utilising traditional Suez Canal transits. At the same time, some shipping lines are gradually reopening or trialling selective Middle East and Red Sea service loops, creating additional pressure on vessel positioning, equipment allocation, and schedule reliability globally.

Across the Asia–Australia trade lanes, carriers continue to actively manage capacity through a combination of blank sailings, reduced allocations, port omissions, and ongoing service adjustments aimed at balancing vessel utilisation and supporting rate stability. During the month of May alone, the market has experienced a total of eight blank sailings, resulting in a significant reduction of available capacity across the trade lane, with thousands of TEU effectively removed from the market. This has continued to place pressure on space availability, schedule reliability, and equipment positioning across key export origins into Australia.

These service adjustments are expected to place additional pressure on available space and equipment allocation over the coming weeks, particularly for cargo requiring direct services or tighter transit windows.

We are also continuing to see congestion and operational pressure at key transhipment hubs including Singapore, Port Klang, and selected North Asian ports, resulting in increased rollover risks, short notice schedule changes, and extended transit times on some services into Australia. Vessel bunching and equipment imbalances remain ongoing concerns across the broader shipping network.

From a market perspective, overall global demand remains mixed; however, available capacity into Australia has tightened due to carrier network adjustments and repositioning of vessels onto alternative global trade routes. This has reduced flexibility on certain weekly sailings and in some cases lowered carrier space allocations available to forwarders and importers.

• Some vessel schedule adjustments and revised ETAs as shipping lines work through ongoing network disruptions
• Space remaining tight on peak sailings, particularly for short lead-time bookings
• Slightly extended transit times on certain services while schedules stabilise
• Continued fluctuations in freight rates and operational surcharges in line with market conditions
• Schedule reliability on some transhipment services into Australia remaining under pressure, however carriers are continuing to implement recovery measures to improve stability
