Update on the Westgate Tunnel Project
As of 15 December 2025, tolling has officially commenced on the West Gate Tunnel, marking a major milestone in Melbourne’s transport network. The introduction of tolls reflects the tunnel’s transition into full operation, supporting improved traffic flow, reduced congestion on surrounding roads, and more reliable travel times for commuters and freight alike. New toll rates will be applicable for all travel on and after 15/12/2025, in line with the commencement of tolling on the tunnel.
Westgate Tunnel Project – New Tolling Fee’s
As you may already be aware, the long-awaited opening of the Westgate Tunnel Project is expected to take place sometime in early to mid-December 2025. With this milestone come widespread tolling changes across the entire CityLink network. These include new tolls on the WGTP itself, the introduction of tolls for heavy vehicles using the Westgate Bridge for the first time in 40 years, and a significant 50% increase in charges for long high-productivity vehicles across all tolled routes.
Unfortunately, these changes will create substantial cost pressures for all transport operators and businesses throughout Melbourne. The new tolls affect almost every part of container logistics, from deliveries into the West, to trips into the Southeast followed by dehires in the West, as well as the many empty-container redirections between container parks and terminals. In short, it’s a complex landscape for everyone involved.
To keep things as straightforward as possible for our customers, we’ve reviewed our data in detail, including delivery points, dehire locations, redirection patterns, and situations where empty containers need to be hubbed through our transport yards when parks are closed. Based on this analysis, we’ll be introducing a simple, flat toll-fee structure for all regions.
Once the WGTP is open and operational the following rates will be applicable. Rates will be valid until end of February and will be reviewed by transport providers to ensure they have correct costs in place.
