Customer Notice – Emergency Fuel / Bunker & War-Risk Surcharges (Middle East Conflict) 

We would like to provide an important update regarding recent developments affecting global shipping markets and potential cost implications for imports into Australia.

Due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and increasing instability across key maritime and energy corridors, global marine fuel markets have experienced heightened volatility. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, and current geopolitical tensions have led to increased fuel prices, operational uncertainty, and elevated war-risk exposure for vessels operating across international trade lanes.

As a result, several ocean carriers have begun implementing Emergency Fuel and Bunker Surcharges (EBS/EFS) to offset rising bunker fuel costs and additional operational risk associated with the current conflict environment. Indicative surcharge levels currently range in the vicinity of USD 150 – USD 300 per 20’ container (USD 300 – USD 600 per 40’ container), with LCL cargo expected to see increases of approximately USD 20 – USD 40 per W/M, depending on the carrier and service route. These surcharges are implemented directly by shipping lines and may apply across multiple trade lanes, including shipments moving into Australia.

In addition, carriers have also begun applying additional emergency or war-risk related surcharges in response to heightened security risks across affected maritime regions. Where applied, these charges may vary significantly depending on routing, vessel exposure, and insurance requirements, and in some cases may range between USD 1,500 – USD 4,000 per container. Such charges are determined by carriers and are typically introduced with limited notice.

As with most carrier-imposed surcharges, implementation and levels remain subject to ongoing review depending on fuel market conditions and geopolitical developments. While these charges are outside the control of freight forwarders, our team continues to closely monitor carrier advisories and will communicate any confirmed changes impacting shipments as early as possible.
